Job Description

Nurse practitioners utilize advanced practice nursing skills and knowledge for all aspects of patient care. Nurse practitioners may practice in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Nurse practitioners may be solo providers or partners within a treatment team. Nurse practitioners perform physical exams, order diagnostic tests, prescribe treatments, educate patients, and may serve as a patient’s primary healthcare provider.

 

Supervises nurse practitioners responsible for patient evaluation, testing, diagnosis, plans of care, and treatment within UCSF Center for Reproductive Health. As a supervisor, receives assignments in the form of objectives with goals and the processes by which to attain them. 

Supervisor will work with the physicians/surgeons/APPs and other clinical and administrative staff to ensure efficient patient management based on accepted practice, including but not limited to, performing histories and physicals, pre-operative planning/coordinating with outside providers and PCPs as applicable, responding to change in patient status, providing needed prescriptions/evaluations/referral/treatments as permitted under standardized procedure. Provide home health services and DME, DMV evaluations, referrals, consultations, PT, order radiographic or diagnostic requests, and specialized treatments. (e.g. chemotherapy with the approved privilege). Provide patient and family education, arrange follow-up appointments, and engage in any approved privileges after the APP has demonstrated competency through proctoring or FPPE process. OMAG will identify independent practice for approved privileges on the ECHO website and procedural activity will be entered by the provider and monitored via the eLOG system.

 

To evaluate, assess and create a documented plan of treatment per patient’s presenting HPI or established plan of care under the collaboration/supervision of an attending physician.

To answer clinically relevant patient medical advice calls or during bedside communications or in coordination with health care professionals, patients and their families as necessary.

To independently or in a shared visit model, evaluate routine, acute, critical, new patients, or specialty consultations when needed or required and discuss with attending and staff as appropriate and document in the EHR. 

Be able to interpret and act upon ordered tests, procedures, and radiographic studies.

To assist in formulating and implementing protocols to improve efficiency in the clinical specialty.

Effectively communicate with family or patients in person, telephone and/or other electronic modalities in a timely manner. Ensure in their absence, appropriate clinical coverage has been arranged for patient management and communication as appropriate.

At all times adhere to all policies and procedures of UCSF Health in terms of HIPPA/Communication/Privacy/Code of Conduct, and any other UCSF or Med Center Policies, which includes meeting the encounter closure requirements of the Med Staff Bylaws.

Mandatory attendance at APP UCSF Onboarding Sessions (5 X 2 hours over 12 months) for all new APP employees whether experienced or new to APP practice. Adhere to all scheduling and communication policies whether specific or as outlined in the collective bargaining agreement.

Qualifications
Qualifications: - Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise a team and to manage the complex workflow and competing priorities involved with providing quality care as a nurse practitioner - Solid knowledge of the clinical and operational issues for nurse practitioners performing advanced-practice nursing within departments and specialty areas, including evaluation, testing, diagnosis, and treatment, as well as patient-care concepts, policies, outcomes measurement, quality standards, ethics issues, quality improvement, and continuing staff education and professional development - Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to quickly analyze problems, determine appropriate level of intervention, and develop and apply effective solutions - Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaborations with all levels of clinical staff and management, consultants, researchers, and outside agencies - Solid written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to train and mentor subordinates, convey complex clinical and technical information in a clear and concise manner, and to prepare and present a variety of reports, documentation, analyses, and project proposals - Knowledge of clinical and administrative software and specialized applications and data management systems used by nurse practitioners in providing advanced-practice nursing care, research, documentation, and employee supervision. - Six months or more of NP/APP employment experience - Knowledge of general obstetrical care and female reproductive anatomy and physiology Preferred Qualifications: - Two or more years RN/NP clinical experience in Reproductive Medicine/Endocrinology, Assisted Reproductive Technology (A.R.T.), Obstetrics/Gynecology, Women’s Health Services - Two (2) to three (3) years’ experience with diagnostic ultrasounds - Strong knowledge of human resources management policies, with the ability to train, monitor, evaluate, and document staff issues and performance, and to participate in decision-making on human resources matters. - One (1) to three (3) years of RN/APP employment experience in provision of women’s health clinical services Education/License/Certifications: - BRN recognized graduate master’s degree program as a nurse practitioner - National certification as Nurse Practitioner
