Job Description

The General Surgery Nurse Practitioner complements and assists the work of the attending faculty, surgical fellow, and surgical residents to provide integrative inpatient and outpatient care for the surgery services, which include acute care, gastrointestinal, bariatric, colorectal, hepatopancreatobiliary, surgical oncology, breast, plastic, and endocrine surgery. The General Surgery Nurse Practitioner serves as a high-level professional, whose activities span the full range of care of adult surgical patients, taking responsibility for the safe delivery of care under the supervision of attending physicians and residents.

Full assumption of these responsibilities will follow a training period, during which time the General Surgery Nurse Practitioner will be monitored by a physician supervisor to determine that knowledge and skills have reached the appropriate level. The Nurse Practitioner will meet productivity expectations as set forth by the Section Chief of General Surgery, performing any duties related to patient care activities that are appropriate and clearly delineated.

Qualifications
Required qualifications: - Graduation from a California Board of Registered Nursing recognized Nurse Practitioner Program with a master’s or doctoral degree aligned with the patient population and clinical role. Two to Three (2-3) years of previous experience as a registered nurse in an Acute Care Setting with surgical patients. Preferred qualifications: - Possess the skills, knowledge, and abilities to care for General Surgery patients in the following categories: acute care, gastrointestinal, bariatric, colorectal, hepatopancreatobiliary, surgical oncology, breast, plastic, and endocrine surgery. - Two (2) years or greater Acute Care NP experience in an acute care setting with the General Surgery patient population within the past five years. - Completion of an advanced practice fellowship in a surgical specialty and ability to provide evidence of completion. License/Cerification: 1. California Registered Nurse (RN) License without restriction 2. California Nurse Practitioner (NP) License without restriction 3. California Nurse Practitioner Furnishing Number 4. NP national board certification from an accepted certifying agency aligned with the patient population and clinical role Adult Hybrid Inpatient and Outpatient (ACNP-BC, AGACNP-BC, ACNPC-AG, ACNPC). 5. California Driver License (if required for position) 6. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Registration with Schedules 2, 2N, 3, 3N, 4, and 5 registered to a California address 7. American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification 8. Additional required AHA certifications: ACLS 9. Additional required certifications (such as ENLS): None UCSF Medical Center and Campus requires certain healthcare providers to be credentialed. In most cases this is done through its Office of Medical Affairs & Governance (OMAG) prior to the first working day. Credentialing and approval of the Standardized Procedures takes between 60-90 days but can vary.
